Chapter 17 – Seventh Tier

Revit and Terus stared as a gorgeous blonde led the urchin girls in matching t-shirts into their room. “This is a nice size suite,” she said. “We’ll take the bedrooms.”

“Let me guess, the Pack Rats are moving in?” Revit asked.

“And don’t tell me, you’ve got to be Ander,” Terus smiled.

“Yes, I am, and I’m in charge of your detail.”

“Our detail,” Revit chuckled. “Well trained to protect a couple of wizards?”

“Uh, not exactly,” she admitted as the girls explored the rest of the suite.

“Oh, this is going to be fun,” Terus muttered. “On top of everything, we’re now their protection detail.”

Ander nodded, “And you are not to scare them, telling them that.”

Revit grinned, “We wouldn’t think of it.”

That’s when the door to the adjourning room opened. “Hi, boys,” Jeanette said, another familiar face peering in behind her. “Thomas and I have taken this suite. We’ve got separate egress, so bar this door unless we identify ourselves. You know the drill.”

“We’re to trust to nothing. Got it,” Terus said.

Revit counted off on the fingers of his right hand, “Check for poisons. Check for wardings or enchantments, illusions, slight of hand where mundane magic might do—”

“You left out the most important one,” Thomas called out from the other suite.

“Don’t get distracted by a pretty face!” the twins chorused, which was actually the first thing on the list Thomas had ingrained in them based on his experience, well, from in the movies. That was all the more irritating since they were trying not to stare at Ander.

Jeanette said, closing the door to the adjoining suite, “Enjoy getting acquainted. Thomas and I are going to be conference and are not to be disturbed.”

One of the girls drew the curtains on the windows and waved goodbye to Gallen as the twins heard the doors being bolted.

The girls came out of all the bedrooms, curtains drawn behind them, and something more. They all had small screwdrivers and dumped what they’d found on the coffee table. Ander smiled, “Excellent job, ladies… Gallen’s been teaching us to find all the pesky cameras and bugs. So, we haven’t been having much time for such things as hand-to-hand combat.”

“We’ve warding the place, top to bottom,” Revit said. “None of those matter.”

“Why is Gallen making you all so paranoid?” Terus asked.

“Perhaps you should ask her,” Ander suggested.

“You’re not doing anything blindly,” Revit said, no longer thinking any of this funny.

“No,” Ander said, “but you’ll need to ask Gallen why. If I were you, I’d better follow those five rules.”

The twins looked at each other, then looked at the girls.

“You ladies likely would want to get cleaned up,” Revit said. “After all, those t-shirts look like you’ve been wearing them for days.”

“I don’t think we have much in the way of clean clothes, but feel free to cut towels into ponchos,” his elvin brother said.

“Oh, we’re happy to provide suitable illusions, if any of you prefer to go au natural.”

For some reason, neither suggestion went over well.

Ander frowned, knowing she and the t-shirts the girls were wearing were rather rank.
